Product description

The Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation VIZE 97 and Czech Mint present a new collection of unique commemorative medals!

The uniqueness of this collection is due to its authors – they all had close ties with Václav Havel and they all joined in their efforts to fulfil the wish of the first Czech president, which was saving the Saint Anne church – The Prague Crossroads.

The Czech Mint will gradually issue medals inspired by artwork of Bořek Šípek, Olbram Zoubek, Jiří David, Kurt Gebauer, Aleš Lamr, David Černý and Jaroslav Róna. These artists work in fields that are entirely different from medal design, which will make their creations all the more interesting.

When designing the first medal of the cycle, Bořek Šípek could not contain his love of glass. The centre of the medal, which is not traditionally circular but shaped to resemble a flower, depicts a magnifying glass. A red heart is painted on it - a motif that everyone unmistakably connects with Václav Havel. Havel’s name and the title of the medal are inscribed on the obverse side. On the reverse side is the inscription of The Prague Crossroads in Czech and English.

Bořek Šípek says, “It is my first medal ever and, at the same time, a memento of Václav Havel, with whom I had many conversations about democracy. I refer to these discussions in my design of the medal - the central motif is ‘a magnifying glass for democracy in detail’,which is also a loose translation of the title of my work Macroscopium rationen popularem tuens. The medal has a circumference of eleven wavelets, which is the magic number and also the number of letters in Václav Havel’s name.”

Seven leading artists, seven exceptional medals. All designed to save the Saint Anne church. The proceeds from the sale of the medals issued in the coming years will be donated to facilitate its reconstruction.

The silver medals are packed in luxury wood cases and issued in a limited edition of 600 pieces, of which the first 200 pieces are numbered. Do not miss the opportunity to own a unique piece of art while contributing to a good cause.
