Product description

The Czech Mint’s series of silver commemorative medals titled Retro commemorates various aspects of the former regime. The second issue nostalgically recalls sport and socialism.

Physical education and sport, as a significant component of culture, are an integral part of socialist education. Its primary task is to maintain and improve the health of the people, increase their physical and military fitness and work performance, and instill determination and bravery in the defense of the homeland and its people’s democratic system in the spirit of socialist patriotism, as well as in the struggle to maintain world peace,” stated the 1952 law. Like all important areas of life, sport—both popular and professional—was subordinated to the ideology and power interests of the Communist Party. It was to be collective, mass-based, and deeply felt. Children and adults alike exercised within physical education and sports organizations; tens of thousands of participants filled Strahov during the Spartakiads, and the top achievements of Czechoslovak athletes were a source of national pride. Yet under socialism, sport was not merely a tool of propaganda but a natural part of life. It taught perseverance, fairness, and teamwork; it brought the joy of movement and a sense of freedom; and for many, it left memories that lasted long after the regime change. Among the favorite forms of sports activity was cycling. Without modern materials and technology, it was demanding but fulfilling. People rode in T-shirts, shorts, sneakers, and without helmets—fortunately, there weren’t as many cars on the roads as there are today. Every boy’s dream was a Favorit bicycle. In 1978, the millionth unit was produced; production reached 200,000 bicycles a year, and they were exported to 38 countries around the world. In Czechoslovakia, however, they were a scarce commodity. They were sold under the counter for nearly an average monthly salary…

Both sides of the colored medal, which is the work of medallist MgA.Petra Čánská, are connected by the silhouette of the socialist state emblem.Through this ‘window,’ we look back at representatives of various sports. On the obverse side there are runners, a hockey player, and a soccer goalkeeper; on the reverse side there are a gymnast with a ribbon, a kolovor player, a “Let’s Exercise in Rhythm” instructor, and participants in the Spartakiad,” explains the artist. On the reverse side, you’ll also find the Czechoslovak flag and a whole range of sports artifacts from the socialist era.

The medal is set in thematic packaging filled with period photographs.
