Product description
These silver-plated commemorative medals introduce the beauty of the calendar plate of the Old Town Astronomical Clock of Josef Mánes. Another addition of the series belongs to March and the appropriate astrological sign of Aries.
From a young age, Josef Manes travelled throughout Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and the Slovak and met with plain rural people. He was charmed by their immediacy and above all sincerity, in which the artist saw the roots of the nation. It is therefore not surprising, that the villagers have become the main motive of his greatest artwork - the Old Town Astronomical Clock calendar plates. The individual months of year has Manes characterized through a combination of man, nature and Slavic folklore. In his concept he highlighted the ordinary, often despised day work into higher realms of art and also addressed the Czech revivalist society.
The artwork on the border between romanticism and realism fascinates us even today. Its worshiper is also the academic sculpturesess Daniela Kartáková, the author of the series of commemorative medals inspired by the calendar plate of the Old Town Astronomical Clock. The composition of the obverse side of this coinage consists of two circles. The larger one belongs to the allegory of March in the form of a peasant, who in the landscape beneath Bezděz is plowing with harnessed oxen. The smaller circle is dedicated to the zodiacal sign of Aries - it is complemented with the so called putti, a decorative element in the form of baroque children's characters. The reverse of the medal is common to all issues from the cycle - it features an effigy of Josef Mánes with a palette, standing before his life's work.
Do not miss also the intriguing collectible album, which is situated in the menu of the Czech Mint. It accommodates complete series of medals and lets you compare the three-dimensional relief with its two-dimensional artwork.
