Product description
The Slovak silver euro coin, minted in quality standard, commemorates the beauty of the Danube Floodplains Protected Landscape Area.
The Danube Floodplains Protected Landscape Area is located in the Danube Lowlands in southwestern Slovakia, in the former natural floodplain of the Danube River, which was significantly affected by the construction of the Gabčíkovo waterworks. It was declared a protected area in 1998, making it one of the youngest large-scale protected areas in the country. With a total area of 12,284 hectares, it comprises five separate parts stretching from Bratislava to Velkolelský Island near the Hungarian border. The area, which is one of the largest inland river deltas in Europe, includes diverse biotopes including floodplain forests, wetlands, river branches, and lakes. These are home to a significant number of rare species of flora and fauna – for example, the largest number of fish species in Slovakia. The occurrence of waterfowl is also exceptionally rich.
Waterfowl are featured on the reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Karol Lička. The relief features a little egret and a kingfisher. The obverse side depicts a scene from the Danube floodplain forest. While the upper part features a beaver, the lower part shows two typical representatives of Danube fish – a carp and a sturgeon. The relief of the coin is supplemented with the Slovak national emblem, the nominal value of 20 EURO, and the texts CHRÁNENÁ KRAJINNÁ OBLASŤ DUNAJSKÉ LUHY, SLOVENSKO, 2025.
The coin was minted by the Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
