Product description
The Slovak silver euro coin was minted in quality proof on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the start of steam transport on the Bratislava-Trnava railway line.
The first railway line with horse-drawn traffic on the territory of today's Slovakia and the whole of former Hungary was the Bratislava-Trnava-Sereď railway, the first section of which was put into operation in 1840. Although the power was provided by animal traction, the future use of steam locomotives was already envisaged during construction. The necessary modernisation consisted only in widening the embankments and cuts and in rebuilding several buildings and bridges. Steam operation started on 1 May 1873. The line subsequently became part of the main line from Bratislava to Žilina. The task of the so-called Povážská dráha was to connect Hungary with its northern border and to this day it is an important railway corridor, which enables an efficient connection between the western and eastern parts of Slovakia.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů, is a celebration of the technology of the time - it presents a steam locomotive supplemented with a detail of a wheel. The text on the reverse side bears 1873, PARNÁ PREVÁDZKA, BRATISLAVA–TRNAVA. The obverse side then bears a map of the route between Bratislava and Trnava, supplemented with city symbols and important railway buildings. The composition of the obverse side is supplemented with the inscription SLOVENSKO, the state emblem, the nominal value of 10 EURO and the year of issue 2023.
The coin was minted by the Slovak Mint Mincovňa Kremnica and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
