Silver slovak coin 10 EUR 2024 - 80th anniversary of the report on the Auschwitz stand

The Slovak silver euro coin was minted in quality standard to the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Vrba and Wetzler report on the German extermination camps.

Auschwitz was the largest Nazi extermination camp of World War II. One and a half million lives - Jews, Slavs, prisoners of war, invalids, Roma, political prisoners and other innocents were lost there. The inhuman genocide, which included mass executions and horrific experiments, went on for years without the world having any idea. In 1944, however, two young Slovak prisoners managed to escape. Walter Rosenberg, who had been imprisoned for his Jewish origins and who changed his name to Rudolf Vrba, together with Alfred Wetzler, who was being punished for sabotage in a brickyard, managed to outfox the dogs, walk a hundred kilometres over the mountains and reach Žilina. There they met with representatives of the Red Cross and the Jewish Council, with whom they shared their horrific experiences. The details of the extermination camp's, which included a description of the gas chambers and an estimate of the number of victims, soon reached the ears of British Prime Minister Churchill and American President Roosevelt. The report was initially received with suspicion - many considered it too horrifying to be true. But it eventually helped to save thousands of Budapest Jews from deportation and served as evidence in the Nuremberg trials of Nazi criminals.
