Slovak coin 5 EUR 2025 - Royal eagle stand

The next issue in the series of commemorative euro coins dedicated to Slovak fauna commemorates the Royal eagle.

The Royal eagle is a large bird of prey from the hawk family, which earned its species name thanks to its majestic appearance. It is a Eurasian species that inhabits a vast area stretching from southern Moravia to Lake Baikal in Russia. Its home is the lowlands. Originally a steppe species, it has found its current refuge in agricultural landscapes, where it hunts its favorite prey – ground squirrels and hamsters. In winter, when these small rodents hibernate, it hunts hares, for example. A smaller but still significant part of its diet consists of birds – corvids, partridges, pheasants, and pigeons – and because it is very adaptable, it will not turn its nose up at a turtle either. Imperial eagles live for more than 50 years and often form strong bonds for life. Today, an endangered population of 80 pairs lives in Slovakia and Hungary. The law protects them, especially from ruthless people who blame them for economic damage and kill them with poisoned bait...

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker Tomáš Lamač, DiS., is dominated by an eagle guarding a nest with two chicks and one egg that has not yet hatched. The texts give the Slovak and Latin names of the species: OROL KRÁĽOVSKÝ – AQUILA HELIACA. The obverse side of the coin features another eagle sitting on a branch and a male that has caught its prey. The relief of the coin also features the Slovak national emblem, the inscription SLOVENSKO, the year of issue 2025, and the nominal value 5 EURO.

The commemorative coin made of base metals was minted by Mincovňa Kremnica and issued by National Bank of Slovakia.
