1/2 ounce gold medal First public flight by Jan Kašpar proof

Jan Kašpar was born on 20 May 1883 in Pardubice. A graduate of the Prague Technical University Jan took a deep interest in aviation already in the last year of his studies of mechanical engineering. In 1908 he was hired by a firm manufacturing aluminium parts for baloon airships. At this period, first successful attempts were performed in Europe with aircrafts heavier than air and Jan decided to become the first Czech aviator, as well as the country’s first aircraft designer and constructer.

Kašpar accomplished his famous flight from Pardubice to Velká Chuchle on aircraft Blériot XI on 13 May 1911, overcoming a distance of 121 km in 92 minutes flying at the height of about 800 m. He made several other attempts at flying and completed various aircraft designs, however this historical flight was his greatest accomplishment – even by European standards and it was the longest flight undertaken in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire.

In 1913, Kašpar donated his aircraft Blériot XI to the Technical Museum of the Czech Kingdom, the present National Technical Museum in Prague, where it is exhibited until these days.

On the obverse side author of the design, Miroslav Schovanec, placed Jan Kašpar’s portrait and his own signature, and a flying aircraft in the background. The motif is complemented with text in circumscription “První dálkový let Jana Kašpara“ (The first long-distance flight of Jan Kašpar) and the years marking the flight’s one hundredth anniversary.

Aircraft Blériot XI on which Kašpar made his first long-distance flight in the Czech lands dominates the reverse side.
