Product description

The third Ducat series of the Czech Mint, created for Slovak collectors and investors in 2023, tells the story of the coronation of the Hungarian kings in Bratislava. The gold ten-ducat features not only Queen Maria Theresa, but also a scene from the fourth part of the coronation act.

Charles III died unexpectedly in 1740. His only son died as a child and his lands were inherited by his elder daughter Maria Theresa. Because she was pregnant, the Hungarian coronation had to be postponed until 1741. Maria Theresa was crowned according to an ancient ceremony, just like a man. After the coronation, the magnates greeted her with the words "Vivat Rex Hungariae" - "Long live the King of Hungary", as the title of Queen "Regina" was reserved for the wife of the monarch. Maria Theresa reigned successfully for 40 years and with the help of the Hungarian nobility, she gradually acquired other lands denied to her by other monarchs, such as the Kingdom of Bohemia.

"The final act of each coronation took place on the banks of the Danube, on an artificial mound made up of soil from all the counties of the kingdom. The ruler on horseback symbolically struck the ceremonial sword on the four cardinal points, showing that he was ready to protect the country from all enemies, no matter where they came from," explains Slovak historian Štefan Holčík, who is an expert on Bratislava's coronation festivities.

Medal maker Veronika Prokopová, DiS., dedicated the obverse side of the ten-ducat to the portrait of Queen Maria Theresa. The additional motif is a scene from the Coronation Mound. The reverse side is dominated by the Hungarian St. Stephen's crown.

The gold minatge, which weighs ten times the weight of one ducat, is issued in an edition of only 100 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the first Republican St. Wenceslas ducats.
