Traditional Ducat Series
In the footsteps of our ancestors - such is the theme of the Ducat Series of the Czech Mint in 2021. One such trace left behind by our Celtic ancestors is a stone head from Mšecké Žehrovice. You will find it on the gold double ducat.
The stone sculpture, carved at the end of the 3rd century BC from marlstone from Bílá Hora, is a depiction of a druid or other noble man from the Celtic nation. The realistic features of the face make it the perfect period sculpture created outside the realm of classical civilizations.
"The main motif of the obverse side is a depiction of a Celtic head from Mšecké Žehrovice. In a low relief in the background behind the sculpture there are Celtic volutes - typical spiral ornaments that symbolize the historical period from which the artifact comes," Lenka Nebeská, DiS., the author of the double ducat says. The reverse side, which is common to all four mintages of the Ducat series, then presents decorative ornaments inspired by our prehistoric, Celtic, Moravian and Czech ancestors.
The gold mintage weighing two ducats is published in a load of only 100 pieces and respects the specifications set by the legendary St. Wenceslas ducats.
