Traditional ducat series

The Czech Mint's traditional Ducat series pays tribute to the supernatural protectors of our homeland in 2024. The relief of the gold two-ducat commemorates the legend of Saint Wenceslas.

The Premyslid prince Wenceslas was renowned as a peaceful ruler endowed with a number of virtues, among which chivalry, morality and piety stood out. His model of Christian love for his fellow man was Saint Ludmila, his beloved grandmother, who raised Wenceslas until she was murdered by his mother Drahomira.  The people prospered under his rule - even after he decided to submit to the German Empire to prevent a devastating war. Wenceslas's younger brother Boleslaus, who betrayed and murdered him, could not get over this. The tragic fraternal feud made Wenceslas into an unattainable ideal - a saint, a heavenly patron of the Czech land and a hero who, when the Czechs were at their worst, would rise from the dead and at the head of the Blanik Knights would go to the aid of his people…

Medal maker Lenka Nebeská, DiS., dedicated the obverse side of the double ducat to St. Wenceslas in the form of a knight riding a horse. His shield presents St. Wenceslas' eagle. The reverse side, which is common to all four Ducat series mints, bears the heraldic animals of the Czech lands - a lion and two eagles.

The gold coinage weighing two ducats is issued in a mintage of only 100 pieces and respects the specifications set by the legendary St. Wenceslas ducats.
