40 Liberec knights
The town of Liberec is a metropolis of the Czech north, a natural administrative, educational, cultural and economic centre of the Liberec region. Visitors marvel at its unusual location – it is situated in a picturesque basin-shaped valley between the Jizerské Mountains and the dominant Ještěd ridge which lend it the character of a mountain town. The real symbol of Liberec is the mountain Ještěd (1012 m) topped with the “structure of the century“, and it is often described as “the town below Ještěd“. The river Nisa flows in the Liberec valley, springing at the foothills of the Jizerské Mountains and then forming the border between the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland.
Liberec is situated at the area of 106 km2 and is populated by about 106,000 inhabitants. High cultural and economic niveau of the town reflected in its typical construction development. The architectonic face of the town was permanently determined by the massive reconstruction at the end of the 19th century, when most of the original – partially wooden or half-timbered –buildings were torn down and replaced with representative public buildings in Neo-Renaissance style including the townhall, savings house, post office, museum and bathhouses. The original archicture is today represented only by the half-timbered Wallenstein houses dating back to the 17th century, and by the Liberec castle which was rebuilt in the Classicist style.
Precious building monuments include in particular the Liberec townhall, Ceasar’s bathhouses and the Wallenstein houses. Liberec is an advanced dynamic town with developed industry and a population of over one hundred thousand. However, it is also situated at the edge of deep forest and it takes literally several steps to get to nature from the centre. It may be for this reason that Liberec inhabitants have somewhat “northern“ preferences: they love mountains and mountain sports for which there are ideal conditions – especially in winter.
Liberec ducat is called 40 Liberec knights. The obverse side features a Liberec knight, a townhall dominant of Liberec. On the reverse side there is the emblem of the town.
