Traditional ducat series
Maria Theresa - this is the theme of the fourth Ducat series of the Czech Mint in 2024, which was created for Slovak collectors and investors. The gold five-ducat features the famous monarch in the role of a mother.
Maria Theresa was not only a powerful ruler, but also a strong mother. The intricate marriage policy she cultivated made her the "mother-in-law of Europe". She gave birth to sixteen offspring, but only nine survived to adulthood. Queen Marie Antoinette of France stood out among her daughters. Two of her sons went on to become enlightened emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. The first-born, Joseph II, was held in high esteem by his subjects. He abolished serfdom and allowed the practice of non-Catholic religions, but he was rash and his policies earned him many enemies. The underrated Leopold II was less authoritarian. His extraordinary flair for diplomacy and compromise enabled him to spark off the greatest threats facing the empire, both internal and external.
The obverse side of the five-ducat design by the Slovak medall maker Branislav Ronai presents a double portrait of Joseph II and Leopold II. An additional motif is the majestic imperial eagle. The reverse side bears a portrait of Maria Theresa.
The mintage of the gold coinage, weighing five ducats, is only 50 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the First Republic St. Wenceslas Ducats.
