500-crown silver coin Karel Jaromír Erben standard
For the period 2011–2015, the Czech National Bank prepared a new series of commemorative silver five-hundred-crown coins with leading representatives of the Czech culture. The first coin of the series marks the 200th anniversary of birth of writer Karel Jaromír Erben. Six renowned authors of portrait coins were invited to take part in the design competition in November 2009. Other designers also had a possibility to participate in the competition, but without being entitled to compensation. The author of the winning design was Jaroslav Bejvl.
Coins for the Czech National Bank are struck in Czech Mint of 0.925 silver in standard and proof qualities differing in the finish of the surface and edge. Coins in proof quality have a highly polished mint field and matted relief, a plain edge with inscription, while standard quality coins are uniformly polished and have a reeded edge. The coins measuring 40 mm in diameter are 2.55 mm thick and weigh 25 g.
The obverse side of the coin is decorated with a bouquet of meadow flowers symbolizing folk legends, stories and folk tales, with a two-line legend below: “KYTICE Z POVĚSTÍ NÁRODNÍCH“.
The name of state ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA spreads around the lower rim of the coin, as well as the denomination of the coin and currency “500 Kč“. Mintmark of the Czech Mint is placed above the letter “B“ in the word “REPUBLIKA“.
The reverse side features a glamorizing portrait of the writer together with his name“KAREL JAROMÍR ERBEN“, with dates “1811“ and “2011“ at the edges. The mark of the author of the coin Jaroslav Bejvl, consisting of letters “J“ and “B“, is hidden at the right side of the portrait.
Each coin is delivered with a catalogue card containing the description of the coin and its three-dimensional depiction.
