Brass medal John of Luxembourg standard

John I, also nicknamed John the Blind, was the son of Henry VII, the Count of Luxembourg and later Roman emperor. In 1310 the Czech crown was offered to him together with the hand of Princess Elisabeth of the Přemyslid family. By this marriage the Luxembourg family acceded to the Czech throne; for the Czech state it was a period of great prosperity and wealth and its historical significance dramatically increased. John gave up the imperial crown, but he continued to expand the territorial possessions of his family and founded the basis of a state formation called The Lands of the Bohemian Crown, or simply The Bohemian Crown. John of Bohemia thus ruled over his native Luxembourg, Bohemia and Moravia, but gradually also brought under his rule the Cheb region, Upper Lusatia, part of Silesian principalities, as well as possessions in northern Italy. For his younger son John Henry he planned a marriage that ought to have brought him Tirol and Carinthia. In 1325, he introduced coinage of the first Czech gold coins – florins.
