Product description
The romantic castle Bouzov appears on the third 5000 CZK gold coin in high quality standard. It comes from the Czech National Bank´s cycle which represents the most beautiful and interesting castles in the Czech Republic.
The first mention of the castle dates back to 1317, when it was owned by many Czech and Moravian families. According to rumor, the King George of Poděbrady, whose father Viktorin actually resided there, was even born there. The Swedes tried to conquer Bouzov during the Thirty Years' War, but failed. On the contrary, a number of Nordic conquerors became involuntary local prisoners. In 1696, the castle was held by the Order of German Knights, whose grandmaster Evzen Habsburg gave it the present form of the late 19th century. However, the 20th century was very busy in Bouzov. After independent Czechoslovakia was established, the castle was confiscated by the state, but soon returned to the Order's hands. Shortly after that, World War II broke out. Bouzov was taken by the Nazis (Heinrich Himmler, who was supposed to receive the castle as a gift from Adolf Hitler, who was his great admirer), and got into the SS administration. After the war the castle became state property again and was declared a national cultural monument.
MgA. Josef Oplištil, a medal maker and teacher from the medal school in Jablonec nad Nisou, who won the CNB art contest, is the author of the golden honor of the Moravian castle. The reverse side of the coin presents an overall view of an attractive building. The obverse side carries a detail of the castle wall with an arcade. On the arcade´s arches there are banners with heraldic animals of the Czech Republic.
All twelve coins of the CNB cycle can be stored in a thematic collector's etui which you can also find on offer at the Czech Mint.
