Product description

The five-year cycle of the Czech National Bank, which is dedicated to the urban conservation areas of the Czech Republic, presents its fifth issue. The gold coin with a nominal value of 5,000 CZK minted in quality standard commemorates the beauty of Kroměříž.

The history of the Moravian town of Kroměříž has been linked to the Church since its very beginning in the 12th century. The bishops and archbishops of Olomouc had their summer residence in the local castle and a number of unique religious buildings were built in the centre, whose towers form the dominant features of the town. While the churches of St. John the Baptist and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary belong to the most beautiful Baroque churches in Moravia, the Church of St. Moritz is one of the largest and most important Gothic monuments in the whole of our territory. The historic centre of Kroměříž was declared a municipal conservation area in 1978. Twenty years later, the Kroměříž Archbishop's Castle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This baroque palace is surrounded by breathtaking gardens. A network of waterworks and a unique collection of rare trees complete the romantic Subchateau Garden, which is shaped like an English park. The Baroque Flower Garden, inspired by the French gardens of Versailles, boasts a colonnade, fountains, labyrinths and a central pavilion in the shape of a rotunda.

The design by medal maker Karolína Kučerová won the Czech National Bank's art competition. The expert committee was impressed by the imaginative collage of historical Kroměříž buildings on the reverse side of the coin, which consists of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, St. Moritz Church, the Archbishop's Castle and the Garden of Flowers. The Commission also praised the obverse side, which presents heraldic animals of the Czech Republic embedded between the colonnade columns in the Garden of Flowers.

Gold coins from the ten-piece cycle of the Czech National Bank can be stored in a wooden collector's case that is also offered by the Czech Mint.
