Cathedral of St. Elizabeth
The third gold coin of the Czech Mint's four-part miniseries, which pays tribute to the Cathedral in Košice, features a depiction of its patron saint - St. Elizabeth.
Nomen omen! The name, which comes from Hebrew and means "consecrated to God", seems to have predetermined the life path of the Hungarian princess Elisabeth of Thuringia... The woman who was nicknamed "mother of the poor and sick" devoted her life to caring for the needy. Although she was a powerful princess of the Thuringian Lancastrian Empire, she was distinguished by her humility and acts of merciful love. She founded hospitals for the sick, distributed grain from the granaries to the hungry, and hired the poor to build roads and bridges. Despite the insults and scorn of the surrounding nobility, she lived simply, godly life and treated all people as equals. After her beloved husband Louis IV, who was her support, died during the Crusades, she was expelled from her own castle by his relatives. Undaunted, she entered a Franciscan monastery in order to continue doing good without financial means. She was only 24 years old when she died in 1231, but the legend of her kindness was known far and wide. No wonder she was canonized just four years later. Then, in the 1340s, colonizers paid tribute to her, making her the patron saint of a newly founded city in her native Hungary - Košice...
The author of the coin - the medal maker Lenka Nebeská, DiS. - was inspired by the neo-Gothic statue of St. Elizabeth and the beggar, which decorates the south portal of the Košice Cathedral. The composition of the reverse side is completed by the Slovak inscription SVÄTÁ ALŽBETA. As this is a coin issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, the obverse side bears the necessary elements of this issuer - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 10 DOLLARS and the year of issue 2022. All this is supplemented with gothic ornaments.
Coins with the motifs of St. Elizabeth's Cathedral can be stored in a collector's etui that can also be found in the offer of the Czech Mint.
