Mythical Creatures

The seventh gold coin of the Czech Mint from the Mythical Creatures series represents Cerberus.

The medal maker
Asamat Baltaev, DiS., placed an angry barking monster with a spiked collar on the reverse side of the coin, accompanied by the English inscription CERBERUS. It is not without interest that the mintage does not have a classic coin frame - instead, the relief is surrounded by decorative Hellenistic ornaments that permeate the entire collecting cycle.  As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued under a foreign licence from the island of Niue, they bear the name and profile of the monarch Elizabeth II on the obverse side, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2021.

A fearsome three-headed dog named Cerberus
was the guardian of the entrance to the underworld in Greek mythology. He kept the dead souls from returning to the world of the living. He became a symbol of vigilance and watchfulness, yet several ancient heroes managed to outwit him. First, the legendary Heracles got the better of him and overcame him with his immense strength, thus fulfilling the last of the twelve impossible tasks. The singer Orpheus, who wanted to bring his dead love Eurydice back from the underworld, used his lovely singing to lull Cerberus to sleep. Aeneias, founder of the Roman nation, bribed the hellhound for a change. He used a honey cake, which Kerberos had a weakness for, and this sweet was then put in the coffin of the dead who feared the journey to the other world. According to another legend, a mere handful of dirt from the underworld was enough to appease Cerberus.

Remember that the Czech Mint also offers a spectacular
collector's album where you can store your complete 12-piece collection of mythical creatures.
