Old Picture Postcards
The Old Town Astronomical Clock is another Prague landmark that appears on the Czech Mint's gold mini-coin set in a replica of a historical postcard.
The history of the instrument, which measures not only time but also the position of the heavenly bodies, began in 1410, making the Old Town Astronomical Clock one of the oldest in the world. It is a unique testimony to the technical skill of medieval clockmakers and a unique art work that combines many different styles, from Gothic to Romantic. The Prague Astronomical Clock is also shrouded in a number of legends which say that its operation is linked to the very existence of our country... "At the time of the postcard boom at the end of the 19th century, the unique Prague landmark was a frequent subject of their work. Postcards with the astronomical clock were mostly oriented in portrait, adjusted to the character of the building, therefore, postcards designed in landscape are much fewer," says postcard expert Pavel Vursta.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Matěj Funk, is dominated by the astronomical dial of the Old Town Astronomical Clock, behind which the silhouette of the entire building is visible. The composition is supplemented with the inscription PRAHA. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue 2022.
An issue that will delight numismatists and philocartists, is an original and affordable collector's piece as well as an attractive regional gift.
