Old Picture Postcards
Telč is the next town to receive a gold miniature coin of the Czech Mint set in a replica of a historical postcard.
The historic centre of Telč - a Moravian town located halfway between Prague and Vienna - is dominated by the royal water fortress, the extensive castle grounds with a garden and park, and above all the square with its undisturbed complex of historic houses. These Renaissance, Baroque and Classical buildings, which are distinguished by their unmistakable arcades and facades, are the main subject of a postcard from the late 19th century, which served as the design template for the coin packaging. "The first local lithograph postcards are unique among collectors. The publishers and artists really took great care of them. One can only admire the skill of the artists and printers who elevated the postcard, which presents the sights of Telč in decorative frames with Czech overprints, to a work of art," says Pavel Vursta, a postcard expert.
The medal maker Veronika Prokopová dedicated the reverse side of the coin not only to a number of town houses, but also to the Church of the Holy Spirit, whose late Romanesque tower is the oldest preserved landmark in Telč. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the inscription TELČ. The obverse side is dedicated to the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2022 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) - or the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign licence to mint its own commemorative coins.
The original issue represents an affordable collector's piece that will delight numismatists, philocartists and patriots of Telč.
