Old Picture Postcards

Ostrava is the next city to receive a gold mini coin of the Czech Mint set in a replica of a historical postcard.

Ostrava
has a rich history - it was mentioned for the first time in 1267, but it became famous especially in the 20th century as an industrial centre of the coal basin. It was thanks to the development of industry in the interwar period that the Moravian-Silesian metropolis began to grow dramatically. The New Town Hall, a monumental functionalist building with an observation tower, whose builders were looking into the distant future, was built in the third largest city of the country at that time... A factual photographic postcard from 1935 served as a template for the coin packaging, which was less demanding to produce compared to older lithographs and colour prints, and therefore more accessible and cheaper. The window photocard depicts important landmarks of the city - individual shots are hand-described, and the postcard could thus serve as a source of information for the owner or addressee.

The medal maker
Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., dedicated the reverse side of the coin to the New Town Hall with its 85.6 m high tower. The building is supplemented with the inscription OSTRAVA. The obverse side is dedicated to the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2022 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) - or the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign licence to mint its own commemorative coins.

The original issue represents an affordable collector's piece that will delight numismatists, philocartists and Ostrava patriots.
