Product description

A number of rituals are associated with the celebration of the arrival of new life in the world. One of them has its roots in distant history and is based on gifting a baby with a gold coin. The Czech Mint has prepared a gold ducat to the birth of a child for everyone who wants to honor old Czech traditions.

The custom of presenting a newborn baby with valuable gift made of precious metal first appeared among the nobility in the Czech lands, specifically in the
Rosenberg family during the Renaissance. They used to give their offsprings decorative gold buttons in the cradle, however, they were gradually replaced by gold coins. The custom soon became a fashion that spread among all social classes. Coin, usually a gold ducat, donated by a godfather or godmother, was supposed to ensure that the baby would not lead a hand-to-mouth existence. This gift, which became the first investment in the life of a newborn and at the same time a talisman for happiness, was maintained by the parents until his or her adulthood. After the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia, the role of the gift for the baby fell to the St. Wenceslas ducats, and the Czech Mint continued this beautiful historical tradition since 1993.

The design of the ducat for 2021 was processed by the medal maker
Petr Patka, DiS. The obverse side is dedicated to a pair of cute babies, which is supplemented with a small heart and an inscription DUCAT TO THE BIRTH OF A CHILD 2021. You can also find a boy with a girl on the reverse side surrounded by zodiac signs and various children's motifs.

Each gold ducat is stored in a thematic
gift box. This allows you to insert a photo as well as inscribe birth data and personal dedication.
