Gold investment coin 250 NZD John Amos Comenius standard
Jan Amos Komenský ranked among the few figures in Czech history whose significance reached far beyond the country’s border. His name is lauded along with the greatest names of Europe’s and, indeed, the world’s cultural history. He is best known as the founder of modern teaching methods, but he was also a prominent philosopher, writer and church official. His written works are sophisticated in style, yet easy to read. Komenský’s correspondence with European scholars and artists of that time serves as indirect evidence of his stature. His efforts in the political arena, part of which was his faith in visionaries‘ prophecies, scored the least success. Conversely, his programme aiming to edify humankind, gradually evolving in his writings and based on education and the idea of perpetual peace, has turned out truly timeless.
The obverse side of the coin features motifs related to the work of Comenius. The main one is a sitting female figure inspired by the allegory of the Grammar from his textbook for children Orbis Pictus, however compared with the original it is simplified and mirror reversed. At the lower rim of the coin it is complemented by a simplified round planetary scheme. Then there is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth, denomination of the coin (250 New Zealand dollars), name of the country (New Zealand) and the year of issue (2011).
The reverse side shows John Amos Comenius – sitting – designed according to a drawing of the period. The edge inscription is in Latin: Johannes Amos Comenius – Praeceptor gentium (Teacher of the Peoples), as well as the title of his work “Didactica opera omnia“ placed at drapes hanging from a table.
