Czech and Czechoslovak Hockey Legends

The thirteenth gold coin from the cycle Legends of Czechoslovak Hockey of the Czech Mint pays tribute to Jiří Holeček.

The goalkeeper, nicknamed "Fakir", became famous for his lightning observation and incredible relaxation in his knuckles
. His miraculous interventions against shots from close range provided his teammates with great confidence and helped Czechoslovakia not only to win the silver Olympic medal from Innsbruck in 1976, but especially to win the three world titles in 1972, 1976 and 1977. Our hockey players also fought their way to the final of the prestigious  Canadian Cup in 1976, where the goalkeeper made a huge impression on the then best NHL player. "It was over and we were in the stadium before to go home, and Bobby Hull was there. He took a Slovak interpreter and told me that I will not fly home to Prague, but to Chicago, that he wants me to join his team, " says Holeček, who rejected the lucrative offer for a fabulous million dollars because he feared what would happen to his wife and preschool children in Czechoslovakia. …

Medal maker
Mgr. Petr Horák dedicated the reverse side of the coin to a period portrait of a goalkeeper surrounded by his name, national team jersey number and greatest achievements: JIŘÍ HOLEČEK - 2 - INNSBRUCK 1976 - WORLD CHAMPION 1972 1976 1977 - MEMBER OF IIHF HALL OF FAME AND CZECHOSLOVAK HOCKEY. The composition of the reverse is supplemented with the characteristic laminate mask of the goalkeeper. The coins of the Czech Mint are licensed by the State of Samoa, and their obverse side therefore bears the necessary attributes of this foreign issuer - the state coat of arms, the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2020 and the nominal value of 25 DOLLARS (WST).

You can store Jiří Holeček's coin in a special
collector's case in the form of a puck that can hold a complete series of fourteen hockey coins.
