The Empress, who was born 300 years ago and to whom belongs the miniseries of gold coins Reforms of Maria Theresa, has inherited an empire surrounded by enemies. To defend it, she carried out an unprecedented military modernization. In 1740, when Maria Theresa took over the government, the Habsburg monarchy found itself in a military conflict, called the Wars of the Austrian Succession. Their reason was the refusal of female succession to the throne by the neighboring states - Prussia, Bavaria and France. The Habsburg army soon proved to be inefficient and its frequent defeats caused the call for military reform. Their model role was the war machine of Prussia. While previously the army of Maria Theresa consisted of the mercenaries, a permanent army was newly established. The compulsory military service was introduced for men from 17 to 40 years. The military service was practically lifelong - it concerned only the peasant and craft sections of the population, but even those could redeem of the service. The reforms processed by Field Marshal Leopold Daun also ensured, that a sufficiently large squad needed to be trained, equipped and clothed in a uniformed manner. They were built barracks and an impregnable fortress. Maria Theresa also knew, that the army can not do without capable leaders, and therefore in 1751 in Vienna established a military academy, which provided much-needed influx of qualified officers.
The author of the graphic form of this gold coin is a young medal maker Roman Shamilyan, DiS. Because the Theresian military education has placed a great emphasis on the cannoneers, he has chosen as the main motive of the reverse side a Habsburg cannoneer standing by the cannon with a rifle on his shoulder. The composition is complemented with the Order of Maria Theresa, the Austrian highest military decoration awarded for exceptional bravery, and the inscription REFORMY MARIE TEREZIE – VOJENSKÁ. /Reforms of Maria Theresa - Military/
