Moravian town of Šternberk is situated in a charming countryside in the foothills of Nízký Jeseník mountains. Šternberk as a town was first mentioned in 1296. The town’s builders probably resumed construction in the place of an older settlement below the Gothic castle that had been founded here between 1253–1269 by the lords of Šternberk.
The town’s historic core is located on the left bank of the Sitka River where a number of houses built in Greek Revival and Empire style have been preserved. A castle is towering above the town; originally an early Gothic building with a preserved tubular tower and a chapel dating back to the 14th century. The castle was later extended and in the 16th century rebuilt in Renaissance style. Other landmarks of the town include the Church of the Annunciation with former monastery, the townhall on Horní náměstí (the Upper Square), Špitální (Hospital) church at Olomoucká Street or Mariánský sloup (Column of the Holy Virgin).
The obverse side of the token is decorated with cogwheels of a clock mechanism with the name of the token in circumscription.
The reverse side features the emblem of the town – a characteristic feature of all tokens in the local ducats series.
