Architectural styles

Baroque, which concludes the entire cycle dedicated to architectural styles, appears after Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance art on the half-kilogram platinum medals of the Czech Mint.

Baroque became the last universal and unified artistic style of the whole of Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries
. It has been reflected in architecture, the visual arts, literature, theater, music,… and it is described as "holistic art", which blurs the boundaries between all artistic and life expressions in order to create a unified common effect. In its basic features, Baroque represented an extension and conceit of Renaissance artistic tendencies. However, it denied them at the same time, because it became part of the revival of Christianity, which came with the victory of the Counter-Reformation. The style was to evoke feelings of humility and devotion to God, which was achieved by power, grandeur, dynamism, drama and decorative splendour. Although this approach expressed the supremacy of the power of the Catholic Church and absolutist rulers over subjects, Baroque was accepted by all social classes for its intelligibility, emotional warmth, mysticism, and opulence - as the antithesis of the cold and rational austerity of the Renaissance.
