Set of 2006 circulation coins Czech euro coins standard

In 2005 the Czech Mint launched an interesting experiment: it commissioned students of the School of Industrial Arts in Jablonec nad Nisou (enrolled in the Minted coin and medal program, the only program training young people in the art of mintage) to design a Czech side of future euro coins. The students submitted dozens of designs which were assessed by professional designers, numismatists and representatives of the Czech and Austrian mints. The winning designs were translated into medals which are included in this set.

The set comprises Czech circulation coins that were not released into general circulation and did not become valid legal tender in 2006, at face values of CZK 0.50, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50, and medals in the form of Euro coins, including 1-cent, 2-cent, 5-cent, 10-cent, 20-cent and 50-cent coins and 1-euro and 2-euro coins.

Obverse, i.e. national sides of the euro coins feature the following student designs:

1 cent – hops plant (Humulus lupulus), word-known beer ingredient

2 cent –grapes of wine, Czech and Moravian varieties

5 cent – leaves of linden tree (Tilia cordata), the Czech national tree

10 cent – Holašovice village, UNESCO Heritage Site in South Bohemia

20 cent – Saint John of Nepomuk’s holy shrine at Zelená Hora

50 cent - Prague Castle

1 € - portrait of Jaroslav Heyrovský, Nobel Prize laureate in polarography

2 € - portrait of Jaroslav Seifert, Nobel Prize laureate in literature

The reverse side of the Czech-designed coins, which is identical in all existing euro coins, features the Moravian eagle on cent pieces and the two-tailed Czech lion on euro pieces.
