Product description
The silver coin with a nominal value of 10 euro was minted in quality standard to the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising.
The defeat of the Nazi armies was to come the end of 1943. The Third Reich, the Klerofascist regime in Slovakia, a German satellite began to collapse. The Slovaks, who refused to participate in the Nazi rampage and who did not want to belong to the losers when the war ended, decided to rise up. The anti-fascist party of Slovak society, which had been encouraged by the victorious Allied advance during the summer of 1944, joined together in preparing the revolt. The uprising was not supposed to break out until the Red Army approached the Slovak border, but the rebels were forced to act much earlier. They began their action on 29 August 1944, as German troops began to occupy their territory. The outnumbered and less well armed Slovaks fought bravely, but when they lost Banská Bystrica, they were forced to retreat to the mountains, where they resorted to guerrilla warfare. The enraged Germans unleashed terror to punish the rebels and anyone who helped them. Dozens of settlements were burned and thousands of people lost their lives. However, the partisans did not give up and played a significant role in the liberation of their homeland, which lasted until April 1945 under the leadership of the Red Army. One of the largest anti-Nazi uprisings made Slovakia part of the victorious anti-Hitler coalition and inspired another resistance movement in war-torn Europe…
The reverse side of the coin presents the building of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising and a historical map of the Slovak Republic. The rebellious territory with its heart in Banská Bystrica is surrounded by arrows marking the directions of enemy attacks. On the obverse side of the coin you will find Slovak mortar fire controllers, a tank, an armoured train, a plane and an air force emblem. The inscriptions on the reverse side state 1944 SLOVENSKÉ NÁRODNÉ POVSTANIE (1944 SLOVAK NATIONAL UPRISING). The necessary attributes of the euro coin are the nominal value of 10 EURO, the inscription SLOVENSKO (SLOVAKIA), the year of issue 2024 and the Slovak national emblem. All this is the work of the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů.
The coin was issued by the National Bank of Slovakia and minted by the Mincovňa Kremnica Mint.
