Product description
The day of formation of Czechoslovakia, it means 28 October 1918, was perhaps the most important milestone in the history of our nation. After several centuries of its connection with the Habsburg Monarchy a modern state was created. The Czech Mint, together with the Slovak Mint Kremnica, as a memento of this event, prepared really exceptional issue - a set of two silver medals dedicated to two great personalities who worked for the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the creation of the Czechoslovak state - Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Milan Rastislav Štefánik.
M.R. Štefánik was the main initiator of the establishment of the Czechoslovak National Council. During his stay in France he prepared the ground for negotiations with senior representatives of the Government, about the independence of Czechs and Slovaks, for T.G. Masaryk. Štefánik also advocated the same thing through his support in many other countries. In mid-1918 the powers of the Agreement promised the recognition of independence for the Czech and Slovak country to T.G. Masaryk, the leader of the Czechoslovak foreign resistance movement, and he established the Provisional Czechoslovak Government in Paris. Menawhile Czech political parties had formed a National Committee that on 28 October 1918 in cooperation with representatives of the resistance movement issued a law - for the first time ever - on the establishment of an independent state of Czechoslovakia. The continuity of this state finally came to its end in 1993, after the division of the former federation into two independent, but always historically, ideologically and culturally related countries - the Czech and Slovak Republics.
A set of medals of pure silver in proof quality is stored in a wooden etui, which is adorned with tasteful thematic engraving, and thus represents a splendid package for two exceptional numismatic treasures.
The medal T.G. Masaryk from the Czech Mint was prepared by the artist Martin Dašek. His attention to detail is reflected not only in a very successful portrait of "Daddy" Masaryk on the obverse side of the medal, but also in design of the motiv on the reverse side, the collapse of the monarchy, which is compositionally complemented by the inscription SEN NÁRODŮ SE STAL SKUTEČNOSTÍ (“DREAM OF THE NATIONS BECAME REALITY”).
Another original perspective on the subject of the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire offers the reverse side of the second medal from the set, which was directed by the Mint Kremnica and by the talented medallist Štefan Novotný. Its obverse side is dedicated to an excellent portrait of M.R. Štefánik.
