Product description
One of the most important discoveries of the 20th century orientalists - it is a magnificent Bedřich Hrozný`s initiative. It is just 100 years ago, when he managed to decipher the mysterious cuneiform, in which he recognized the language of the ancient Hittite nation. Watershed moment of Czech science is now immortalized on commemorative 200 CZK coin of pure silver by the Czech National Bank.
Bedřich Hrozný was born in a family of a devout Lutheran priest and the family itself was also preparing him for the spiritual vocation. However, during the high school studies he knew Professor Václav Justin Prášek, a prominent orientalist and historian who aroused big interest in new fields in young Bedřich. Gradually he penetrated into the mysteries of twelve dead languages and turned his attention to cuneinform writing. He demonstrated not only his knowledge, but later also his courage during archeological expeditions in Turkey and Palestine.
The exceptional commemorative silver coin proudly bears the distinction of Bedřich Hrozný`s personality. Its author is a great artist Vladimír Pavlica, who fascinated a commission with his original graphic concept, a successful portrait and an atypical composition of the heraldic side. The obverse side of the coin depicts four sealing rollers discovered by Bedřich Hrozný himself in ancient Kanes, three Czech heraldic animals, Hrozný`s autograph, inscription ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA and nominal CZK 200. On the reverse side of the coin, with the cuneiform background we can see an exquisite portrait of Bedřich Hrozný completed with inscriptions "BEDŘICH HROZNÝ", "ROZLUŠTĚNÍ CHETITŠTINY", "1915" and "2015". The result is an excellent work of art that will embellish your numismatic collection!
