Product description
This silver coin from the series inspired by the fantastic world of The Lord of the Rings commemorates the wizard Gandalf the Grey.
The Grey Wanderer has many names - Olórin, Láthspell, Mithrandir, Tharkûn, Incánus - but most inhabitants of Middle-Earth know him as Gandalf. At first glance, he looks like an old man who has to lean on a staff to walk, but in fact he is one of the oldest, most powerful and wise beings of all time. Unlike other wizards, he has never settled down. Instead, he roams the world, helping where needed and learning the value of what others neglect. Although Gandalf has no home, he does have one favourite place. It is the Shire, which he visits often to take a break from his worries and spend time with his best hobbit friends. Like Gandalf, these earthy halflings hold a power that is not obvious at first sight, and together they will decide the fate of Middle-Earth...
On the reverse side of the coin, you will find a coloured depiction of Gandalf the Grey in his typical travelling attire – a cloak, pointed hat or long staff. The surrounding relief is dedicated to the slopes of Hobbiton, which are covered with trees and pierced by hobbit holes. The obverse side then presents the portrait and name of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2021 and the nominal value of TWO DOLLARS (NZD) - the attributes of the coin's issuer, which is the island of Niue. The coin was minted by the team at the New Zealand Mint under official film licence.
An integral part of the issue is an elegant wooden case with a special mechanism used to display the coin.
