Silver coin 1 Oz Claude Monet: Water Lilies

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the French painter Claude Monet began to devote himself with unprecedented intensity to the motif of the pond located in the garden of his home in Giverny. It was here that he created an extensive series comprising some 250 paintings, which became famous under the collective title Water Lilies. Whilst his early works still clearly depict the pond and its surroundings, his later Water Lilies increasingly approach abstract art. They no longer represent a faithful depiction of the landscape – instead, the water’s surface and the flowers resting upon it blend with the reflections of trees and the ever-changing sky on the water’s surface… With the help of delicate, layered brushstrokes, Monet managed to capture the constantly changing light and atmosphere of individual moments. Although his compositions appear calm and harmonious, they conceal constant movement. The artist’s technical virtuosity is undeniable, but what continues to fascinate viewers most is his ability to transform an ordinary corner of a garden into an almost meditative space without time or boundaries. It is no wonder that it is precisely the Water Lilies that have become the pinnacle of Impressionism and a harbinger of modern abstract painting…

The reverse side of the rectangular coin is entirely filled with a reproduction of Monet’s work. Thanks to colourisation technology, Water Lilies stand out in vivid colours. The obverse side, which is filled with decorative curves, features the issuer’s details. Since the coin is issued under licence by the state of Cameroon, it bears its name and the nominal value of 1,000 CFA francs (XAF).
