Product description

Silver coins of the Mint XXI commemorate the most famous paintings in world art. Naturally, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera is among them.

It was the 1480s when the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli created his famous work titled Primavera—or Spring. It was set in the environment of the Florentine court of the Medici family, where ancient mythology, humanist philosophy, and Renaissance aesthetics intertwined. Tempera on wood depicts nine figures set against the almost theatrical backdrop of an orange grove. In the center stands the goddess of love, Venus, accompanied by her winged son, Cupid. On the right, the god of the west wind, Zephyr, pursues the nymph Chloris, who subsequently becomes Flora, the personification of spring. On the left, the three Graces, who symbolize grace, are dancing, and the god Mercury is dispelling the clouds with his scepter. Although these whimsical figures are drawn from ancient mythology, they are not bound by a single, clear narrative, which leaves room for a wide variety of interpretations. Some see in the painting a simple celebration of beauty, love, and fertility. Others see a political allegory—the conflict between the two Medici lines. Still others perceive the transformation of sensual love into spiritual knowledge. The technical perfection of the work is undeniable, but what continues to fascinate viewers most is precisely its multi-layered meaning. It is no wonder that the painting has become the most discussed in the history of art…

The reverse side of the rectangular coin is entirely filled with a reproduction of Botticelli’s work. Thanks to colorization technology, Primavera stands out in vivid colors. The obverse side, filled with decorative curves, bears the issuer’s attributes. Since the coin is issued under license by the state of Cameroon, it bears its name and the nominal value of 1,000 CFA FRANCS (XAF).

The coin is stored in an elegant frame, allowing you to easily display this work of art.
