Silver coin 1 Oz Sandro Botticelli: The Birth of Venus

The works of Sandro Botticelli are among the finest created during the Early Renaissance. His patrons came from the most prominent Florentine families - among them the Medici, for whom he painted a work titled The Birth of Venus in the 1480s. This tempera on canvas captures the moment of the goddess of love’s arrival into the world. While the god of the wind ruffles her long hair with his breath, the goddess of spring is ready to drape her nakedness in a floral cloak. Since ancient times, no depiction of a subject from ancient mythology on such a grand scale had been seen. Likewise, the presence of a nude female figure was unusual in art. The sexual undertones of the work are evident at first glance, but alongside earthly love, it also refers to spiritual love - for Venus is a symbol of ideal beauty and purity, which leads humanity to the knowledge of higher truths. The reverse side of the rectangular coin is entirely filled with a reproduction of Botticelli’s work. Thanks to colorization technology, The Birth of Venus stands out in vivid colors. The obverse side, filled with decorative curves, bears the issuer’s attributes. Since the coin is issued under license by the state of Cameroon, it bears its name and the nominal value of 1,000 CFA FRANCS (XAF).
