For centuries, legends have swirled around the figure of the mysterious horseman. Sometimes his body is cloaked in black, other times he is clad in iron armor, but that doesn’t matter—what matters is that he is headless. Some people swear they’ve seen him holding his severed head under his arm, while other witnesses claim to have seen flames shooting from his neck. An encounter with him is, in any case, unforgettable—for this terrifying apparition foretells death, misfortune, or an impending catastrophe… The origins of the legend can be traced back to the myths of the ancient Celts and Germanic peoples. In these ancient cultures, the head was considered the seat of the soul, and its loss therefore signified not only death but also eternal damnation. The Headless Horseman—usually a knight or soldier—thus became a symbol of a being trapped between the world of the living and the dead. In Ireland, people fear the demonic Dullahan; a headless Templar roams Prague; and in the United States, tales are told of a specter haunting the village of Sleepy Hollow. All these riders are the embodiment of the fear of the unknown, dark forces, and death—which cannot be stopped or truly understood…

The reverse side of the coin depicts the headless rider, riding a demonic horse. In one hand, he holds a lantern, and in the other, his own grinning skull. A full moon illuminates the gloomy landscape filled with chilly buildings and twisted trees. All of this is rendered in high relief, accentuated by patina, coloring, and selective gilding. The richly decorated obverse side is dedicated to the essential attributes of the coin’s issuer, the island of Niue. It bears its national coat of arms, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.
