Product description
This silver coin featuring the legendary military commander Hannibal Barca is a unique work of art and a collector's rarity.
In the third century BC, two powers shared influence over the Mediterranean – Rome ruled the Apennine Peninsula and Carthage dominated North Africa. The two magnificent cities were separated by a stretch of water, so it was only a matter of time before their power interests clashed. That was when the Punic Wars broke out. This protracted conflict reached its peak when Hannibal Barca took command of the Carthaginian army. He was no ordinary general – a man raised to hate Rome, he was a strategic genius and therefore planned an attack that no one expected. Only a madman would dare to cross the deadly Alps and attack Rome from the north! But Hannibal did, bringing with him not only tens of thousands of soldiers, but also war elephants, with whose help he began a triumphant march across the Apennine Peninsula. The Romans were seized with panic. They feared the man who had defeated their legions on their home turf and now stood within sight of their eternal city. "Hannibal ante portas! Hannibal at the gates!" cried the desperate inhabitants of Rome. But the situation eventually turned around – Hannibal was called back to Africa to defend his homeland from invasion, and he fell in his last battle near his native Carthage. Although he died, his shadow continued to haunt the Romans. We still tell stories about Hannibal's courage to this day...
The reverse side of the coin depicts the victorious Hannibal surrounded by the ruins of a Roman city. His majesty is emphasised by the rich gilding of the relief. The obverse side is dedicated to a number of weapons, revealing that the coin is part of a series dedicated to legendary warriors. As the coin is issued with licence from a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, its obverse side also bears the necessary attributes – the national emblem, the nominal value of FIVE DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue, 2025.
The issue limit of the coin by T&S Coin is only 500 pieces.
