A two-ounce silver coin featuring the Greek god Poseidon is a unique work of art and a technical marvel, as well as a collector’s rarity.

When the ancient gods took control of the world, three brothers divided the power among themselves. Zeus became the lord of the heavens, Hades ruled the underworld, and Poseidon conquered all the seas. His power extended not only to the surface of the sea but also to the bottomless depths, where lost kingdoms and terrifying creatures lurked. Just like the endless expanse of water, Poseidon was utterly unpredictable—one moment calm and gentle, the next stormy and destructive. The ship of anyone who angered this temperamental god never returned home, and Greek sailors therefore treated him with the utmost respect under all circumstances. However, even those on land were not safe from Poseidon’s wrath. For he ruled with a trident forged for him by the Cyclopes. This mighty weapon both summoned and subdued storms and could cause devastating earthquakes. Yet the god of the seas also performed good deeds on land—for example, he created noble horses…

The reverse side of the coin is dominated by an angry Poseidon with his trident, who summons waves in the form of wild stallions to strike a helpless ship. All of this is rendered in high relief, accentuated by patina, coloring, and selective gilding. The richly decorated obverse side is dedicated to the essential attributes of the coin’s issuer, the island of Niue. Therefore, it bears its coat of arms, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.
