Product description

We commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Aleš Hrdlička, who was one of the most important scientists with czech roots in 2019. A silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK was embossed in quality proof and it was dedicated to the world-famous anthropologist.

The Habsburg monarchy still recovered from the lost war with Prussia and its inhabitants suffered hardship in 1882. Many of them emigrated because of poverty - among them the joiner's Hrdlička family. Their target destination was the New World, which attracted people by its American dream. Alois was the oldest of Hrdlicka's seven children. The boy, who was born on March 30, 1869 in Humpolec, showed an extraordinary learning talent since a little boy, but his beginnings in the New World were harsh. He spent the day working in a tobacco factory, and attended high school English classes in the evening. In the end, the young man, who changed his name to Ales, became seriously ill because of strain. He did not know that the history of modern anthropology began to be written at that moment. The treating physician has noticed Hrdlička's talent for science, and recommended him to study medicine instead of business. Hrdlička was mainly interested in a newly emerging science dealing with the physical, psychological, social and cultural knowledge of a human. Anthropology has become its mission, and he devoted his life to study of human origins and gradual expansion on the planet.

The medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS became the author of the implemented design proposal entered into the competition of the Czech National Bank. The expert committee appreciated "the extraordinarily good portrait of Aleš Hrdlička and depiction of the human development line".

The Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou became the producer of all czech coins.
