Product description
In 2018, 300 years have passed since the death of a renowned Baroque sculptor Jan Brokoff. A silver commemorative coin with a nominal value of 200 CZK in top quality proof was issued by the Czech National Bank on the occasion of this round jubilee.
Jan Brokoff lived between 1652 and 1718 and left a number of sculptural works with various themes. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk became his most famous and most significant achievement. Brokoff first made a wooden sculpture based on a terracotta pattern at the request of nobleman Gottfried Daniel Wunschwitz, whose family extraordinary respected a medieval martyr. He also made the small life-size statue of the Viennese sculptor Matthias Rauchmüller that he elaborated down to the slightest detail - especially the martyred expression of bearded face facing the heavens. The wooden work that remained well preserved to this day, soon became a subject of religious worship, but its main purpose was to serve by casting a bronze sculpture. There was no metalwork in Prague till the Nuremberg bell-maker Wolfgang Hieronymus Heroldt started to work on it. The statue of John of Nepomuk was then placed on the Charles Bridge, where it have been admired by pilgrims, tourists, art lovers and people who believe the saint will help them fulfill their wishes.
A medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS, won the Czech National Bank's art contest. He dedicated the obverse side of the coin to the statue of St. John of Nepomuk on the pedestal. He originally placed the necessary inscription CZECH REPUBLIC around the saint's halo. The reverse side then corresponds to the obverse side and bears the baroque vertical text JAN BROKOFF complemented by the years 1718 and 2018.
