Armored vehicles

The fifth silver coin of the Czech Mint from the series Armoured Technology features the British tank Mk IV Churchill, which served during the Second World War.

The infantry tank Churchill, whose task was to provide close support to infantrymen, was the last armoured tank of its type in British service. It was requested to be built in 1939 due to return to the positional warfare familiar from the First World War. Its design was tailored to traverse trenches and move across heavily shelled battlefields covered with craters. For this reason, the machine was heavily armoured and slow. Relying on close artillery support, its armament was not exceptional. The Second World War, however, was markedly different from the previous conflict. Although there was no place for the infantry tank, the British promptly brought it into service in 1941 due to a desperate shortage of armoured equipment. Initial results were poor - the infamous landing at Dieppe ended in disaster - but the Churchill was continually upgraded and eventually turned into a useful fighting machine. It proved itself in the campaigns in Africa, Italy and Normandy, where a number of inventive variants were employed. For example, the AVRE engineer type, which could demolish bunkers with the help of a mortar, or the Crocodile, whose flamethrower could throw fire at a distance of 110 metres.

The reverse side of the commemorative coin, which is the work of medal maker Petra Patky, DiS., presents two depictions of a British tank - the three-quarter view is supplemented with side silhouette. An inscription of the Mk IV Churchill and a detail of the tank belt complete the composition. The stripes can also be found on the obverse side of the coin, which is common to the entire tank series. As the licence to issue commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is granted by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2023.

The coin is accompanied by a spectacular packaging in the form of a catalogue card full of period photographs, interesting facts and tactical data. The individual cards can be stored in a collector's case that you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
