Cat Breeds

The eleventh silver coin from the Czech Mint’s Cat Breeds series features the Siberian cat.

The origins of the breed, which developed without human influence in its native Russia, date back to the 16th century. Cats that settled alongside humans in inhospitable Siberia had to adapt to harsh conditions, thus developing a medium-length, very dense coat and becoming excellent hunters. These medium-sized, powerfully built felines have a stocky body, shorter legs, and a blunt wedge-shaped head. Because of their thick coat, they prefer cooler temperatures and enjoy spending time outdoors even in less-than-ideal weather. Their winter coat is longer than their summer coat and significantly thicker on the chest, neck, and legs. From their ancestors, Siberian Huskies have inherited a passion for hunting. They have an adventurous nature, pride, and excellent instincts, but they are also communicative, sociable, and loyal.

On the reverse side of the coin, designed by medalist David Paulík, the Siberian cat appears twice. The first depiction is colored, highlighting the coat’s hue. The second is embossed. The composition is completed by the Czech-English inscription SIBIŘSKÁ KOČKA – SIBERIAN CAT. On the obverse side, which is common to the entire series, you will find a silhouette of a cat and paw prints. Since the Czech Mint’s coins are issued under a foreign license from the island of Niue, the obverse side also bears its national coat of arms, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2026.

You can store all twelve coins from the cat series in a collector’s album, which is also available from the Czech Mint.
