Product description
The silver coins of the Czech Mint from the collector's cycle Czech Tennis Legends represent our first compatriot Jaroslav Drobný, who won the prestigious Wimbledon tournament.
Jaroslav Drobný has been close to sport almost since he grew up in the tennis court manager's family at Stvanice in Prague. In the summer he collected balls and watched the game of the biggest tennis stars, in winter his father sprinkled the courts with water, and Jaroslav rode them on skates. He showed extraordinary talent in tennis and ice hockey and soon became a celebrated professional. He belonged to the main strikers of the national ice hockey team and he became the world champion in the championship held in 1947 in Prague. That was when Czechoslovakia won the gold medal for the first time. In 1948 he added a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Svatý Mořic. From 1945 to 1949 he became a multiple tennis champion of Czechoslovakia, in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, and he represented the republic in the Davis Cup from 1946 to 1949. He did not return from the tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland in July 1949 . For fear of his future he remained in emigration, because the communist regime considered tennis as a bourgeois sport. After many peripetitions, he was granted citizenship by Egypt, and Jaroslav Drobny rewarded the African country by winning in its colors in the Wimbledon singles in 1954. At that time he became the world's number one player.
Author of the entire tennis series MgA Martin Dasek placed the portrait of the winning Jaroslav Drobny with his characteristic glasses triumphantly holding the Wimbledon trophy on the reverse side of the coin. It is surrounded by a copy composed of the English text "CZECH TENNIS LEGEND JAROSLAV DROBNY" and an enumeration of his greatest achievements. Tennis coins of the Czech Mint are based on a license of foreign issuer, which is the state of Samoa, and their obverse side therefore carries its necessary attributes, which are the national emblem, the profile and name of the emperor Elizabeth II., the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (WST) and the year of the issue 2018. Composition of the obverse side is closed by inscription "WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONS".
The packaging includes a special Czech-English Certificate of Authenticity, which summarizes Jaroslav Drobný's professional sports track. Along with the other four sports issues, you can put the coin in a collector's box, which you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
