Mythical Creatures
The eighth silver coin of the Czech Mint from the Mythical Creatures collector's series features a centaur.
Centaurs, which are found in ancient Greek myths, are depicted with a human torso and a horse head. These wild creatures - half human and half horse - were a symbol of masculinity, strength, passion and hot-temper. To saddle up and ride an untamed centaur was an extraordinary honour... According to legend, the centaurs were descendants of King Ixion, who was punished by Zeus for his love of Hera. But in reality, they were chosen by prehistoric people who saw a rider on horseback for the first time and who could not imagine that one creature could saddle another.
The medal maker Mária Filová, DiS., placed a sturdy centaur with a drawn bow on the reverse side of the coin and accompanied it with the English inscription CENTAUR. It is not without interest that the coin does not have a classic coin frame, however, the relief is surrounded by decorative Hellenistic ornaments that permeate the entire collection. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign licence of the island of Niue, the obverse sides bear the name and profile of the monarch Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2021.
Remember that the Czech Mint also offers a spectacular collector's album where you can store your complete 12-piece collection of mythical creatures.
