Silver coin Mythological figures - Angel stand

The tenth silver coin from the Czech Mint’s series titled Mythological Figures depicts a kind angel.

Angels are winged messengers who serve as intermediaries between the kingdoms of heaven and earth. They are omnipresent, which is why they can always be close to those who need them. They embody love, safety, tranquility, and peace, yet they wield great power. Although they symbolize purity, they can succumb to the lure of darkness and become fallen angels—demons… Today’s conception of angels is often idyllic. From Christian nativity scenes and Christmas movies, we know ethereal beings with chubby cheeks, curly hair, swan-like wings, white robes, and halos. In ancient times, however, angels certainly did not appear as gentle helpers. Ancient texts describe them as inhuman creatures with many pairs of wings and flaming eyes, with animal faces or bodies in the form of intertwined hoops. Their appearance was meant to inspire awe, to shake mortals, and to remind them of the insurmountable chasm between the earthly and heavenly worlds. In later times, the image of angels changed—partly due to artists who wanted to make them more accessible to human understanding, and partly due to clergy who wanted to emphasize their protective role. Yet even behind the gentle features and snow-white robes, a power still lurks that can bring both blessing and destruction…

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medallist Roman Šamiljan, depicts an angel as we imagine him today - graceful, with a kind smile, a halo, and majestic wings. Since the license to issue commemorative coins for the Czech Mint is provided by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its national coat of arms, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026. These essential attributes are surrounded by the elements of nature - rocks, clouds, trees, and waves. The details of the relief are accentuated by patina.
