Mythological figures

The eleventh silver coin from the Czech Mint’s series titled Mythological Figures features a mischievous goblin.

Goblins are a malicious race of small creatures. Some are downright evil, others more mischievous, but all of them, without exception, love to cause trouble, steal, and hurt others. These ugly goblins should not be underestimated. A single tiny goblin may seem harmless, but in groups they become dangerous. They are inconspicuous, cunning, and spread quickly… It is highly unlikely that such creatures ever existed in the past, and yet all manner of goblins, kobolds, and imps can be found in legends from every corner of the world. How is this possible? The answer is simple. These mischievous creatures serve as a psychological tool that helped our ancestors cope with the frustrations, hardships, and annoyances of life. Did a bag of flour disappear from the pantry? Did the milk in the pot turn sour? It must be that damned goblin! Did a wheel break on the wagon? Did the children fall ill? That damned goblin again! There was no need to look for complicated explanations—such stories offered a simple and tangible cause, thanks to which people could at least partially come to terms with everyday uncertainty. Sometimes it’s simply easier to blame a higher power and the supernatural than to cope with failure, mishap, or chance…

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medalist Roman Šamiljan, depicts the goblin just as we imagine him- dwarfed, with a pointed nose and ears, and a mischievous gaze that portends nothing good. Since the license to issue commemorative coins from the Czech Mint is provided by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its national coat of arms, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026. These essential attributes are surrounded by the elements of nature - rocks, clouds, trees, and waves. The details of the relief are accentuated by patina.

You can store the complete twelve-piece coin collection featuring characters from the realm of myths, legends, and fantasy in a collector’s album, which is also available in our offer.
