Silver coin Mythological figures - Valkyrie stand
Mythological figures
The eighth silver coin from the Czech Mint's series entitled Mythological figures depicts the fearless Valkyrie.
Odin, father of all things and the highest of the gods in Norse mythology, is the patron of war. The lucky few who die in battle can rejoice forever in his hall called Valhalla, whch is typical for home of Asgard gods. Odin's favour on the battlefield is fickle – he gives it as quickly as he takes it away, but only because he wants the best warriors by his side as soon as possible. To this end, he sends the Valkyries to the battlefield – beautiful but dangerous warriors on winged horses who lead the battle, decide victory or defeat, determine who survives and who falls, and judge who is worthy to follow Odin. The valkyries carry brave warriors to Valhalla, where endless revelry awaits them. If they are lucky, one of the valkyries may fall in love with them.. Where did the legends about beings who decide life and death come from? Compared to the rest of the world at that time, Viking women enjoyed great freedom and numerous rights. Many of them were believed to have supernatural powers of vision and knowledge, and were therefore revered as prophetesses or sorceresses. It is therefore possible that the Valkyries were in fact mortal women of flesh and blood – priestesses of war who decided the fate of prisoners of war and chose which of them would be sacrificed to the gods.
The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker Roman Šamiljan, depicts a Valkyrie as described in Norse sagas – with a helmet and shield. The wings of her horse are visible in the background. As the licence to issue commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is granted by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2025. These essential attributes are surrounded by elemental nature – rocks, clouds, trees and waves. The details of the relief are highlighted by patina.
The complete twelve-piece collection of coins featuring characters from the realm of myths, legends and fantasy can be stored in a collector's album, which is also available in the offer of the Czech Mint.
