Silver coin On Wheels - Motorcycle Praga BD 500 proof
Product description
The Praga BD 500 DOHC was the best large-capacity Czechoslovak motorcycle of the interwar period. The 27th silver coin from On Wheels series minted by the Czech Mint's pays tribute to this legendary machine.
In the 1920s, foreign motorcycles dominated Czechoslovak roads. Manufacturers of English and American machines had no domestic rivalo. Designer Jaroslav František Koch decided to change that. At a time when it was not yet common, he believed in OHC valve timing, in which the camshaft is located in the cylinder head in addition to the valve. He found a partner for series production in the Prague-based company Breitfeld-Daněk, where his BD 500 motorcycle was created in 1927. However, the company soon merged with Českomoravská-Kolben-Daněk (ČKD), and the model was produced under the Praga brand, which was famous for its high-quality cars. The Praga 500, nicknamed Beďar, was ahead of its time. It was a technically remarkable machine with a four-stroke single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 499 cm3. The engine had a 2x OHC – or DOHC – valve train, which was used by racing engine designers. The crankshaft was connected to the king shaft via a bevel gear. Two camshafts were then driven by screw wheels. The monoblock was characterised by a carefully designed construction that went down in motorcycle history. The three-speed gearbox and crankshaft could be removed while leaving the engine in the frame, and the oil tank was located directly in the engine block. The reliable motorcycle boasted excellent sports and touring characteristics. Jaroslav František Koch personally tested it when he set off on a journey from Rome to Prague in 1928. He managed to drive the distance of 1,480 kilometres in 35 hours and 40 minutes, setting an endurance record. The Praga BD 500 DOHC was produced between 1929 and 1933. Sales gradually declined as the market was flooded with cheap and simple JAWA and ČZ machines with two-stroke engines. Koch's double-cam design was progressive, but at the same time expensive and complicated to manufacture. It was unnecessarily luxurious for ordinary motorists and employees of state institutions, for whom the motorcycle was intended. Today, however, the Beďar is a sought-after and prized collector's item...
The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek, features a side view of the Praga BD 500 motorcycle. The relief is supplemented with a detail of the engine, specifically the block and cylinder head. Since coins of the Czech Mint are issued with licence from a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears the necessary details – the national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2025. In keeping with the name of the collector's series, the circumference of the obverse side is formed by segments of wheels from various means of transport.
An integral part of the coin is its elaborated wrapping in the form of a pop-up book containing accompanying text and period photographs.
