Product description

Ústí nad Labem is the twentieth statutory city to appear on the Czech Mint's medals minted from one half kilogram of pure silver.

The charming landscape of the Elbe Valley in the north of the Czech Republic is the cradle of Czech history - the richest site of the remains of mammoth hunters and the home of the mythical Přemysl the Ploughman. Right at the confluence of the Elbe and Bílina rivers between the Bohemian Central Highlands and the Ore Mountains lies Ústí nad Labem. The oldest written mention of a settlement with this name dates back to the 10th century - at that time it was a customs house that controlled the Elbe trade for the Czech rulers. The life of the town was connected with water in the following centuries - the Elbe freight transport was crucial for Central Europe and at the turn of the 19th and 20th century Ústí nad Labem became the largest Austro-Hungarian port. This exceptional position was symbolically confirmed by Emperor Franz Joseph I himself when he chose a steamship as a means of transport to visit the town. The development of Ústí nad Labem was also closely linked to the development of industrial production. The advantageous location with excellent access to transport routes was fully exploited in the chemical and food industries. However, the city, which is famous for its industry, is also an important cultural, sporting, business and university centre.

The obverse side of the medal, which is the work of medal maker Štěpánka Doležalová, is dominated by the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Ústí nad Labem, which is famous for its leaning tower. The composition of the obverse side is completed by a detailed aerial view of the town and the river that flows through it. The reverse side of the medal then bears a map of the Czech Republic with its statutory towns marked.

In total, only 48 half-kilogram medals will be produced - each specimen is hand-numbered on the edge and stored in a luxurious wooden case.
